Want to make your YouTube banners eye-catching and stylish? Canva makes it easy! Canva Free and Pro users can equally create awesome designs for their YouTube channel that look great on desktops, tablets, and phones, perfect for all YouTubers and content creators out there!

Here is our detailed guide on how to create your own YouTube video banner, with additional tips and tricks to elevate your YouTube presence!

How to start the design

First, go to Canva and use the search bar to find the "YouTube Channel Art" template.

Canva offers several pre-made templates, but for this guide, we’ll start with a blank canvas to fully customize our design. We can still access templates on the 'Templates' tab.

Safe Area for Desktop

When designing your YouTube channel art, remember to set a "safe area" that will be visible across all devices. This ensures that your YouTube banner design looks good whether it's viewed on a smartphone, tablet, or TV.

To make the “safe area” for desktop:

  1. Go to ‘file’ > ‘Show rulers and guides.
  2. To create a guide, click on the ruler on top and drag your mouse down until it reaches the number 423. Zoom in for precision.

  3. Create a square by going to the ‘Elements’ tab and clicking on the square shape.
  4. Once the square is added, drag it towards the top of the page and let the bottom-edge of the square touch the guide.
  5. After that, click on ‘Position’ > ‘middle’.
  6. Now, the square serves as our “safe area” guide. So, move the line guide to the top-edge of our square, This mark represents the upper limit of what’s visible on a desktop.
  7. Add another horizontal guide at the bottom edge of the rectangle to define the desktop viewing area.
  8. Drag the square on both sides to establish a “safe area” for the desktop view.

Safe Area for All Devices

Next, let’s set the safe area for all devices. This step is important to make sure that your channel art looks good no matter how viewers are accessing YouTube:

  1. Add a vertical guide at 1546 pixels. Zoom in to get a closer look.
  2. Duplicate the rectangle and change the color (to make it visible).
  3. Drag the right side of the rectangle to the guide.
  4. After that, click on ‘Position’ > ‘center’.
  5. Reposition the guide on the right edge of the rectangle.
  6. Create another vertical guide for the left edge.

Remember: The content inside the middle rectangle will be visible on all devices. The gray rectangle shows what’s visible on desktops, while the entire page is visible on TVs. Let’s delete the rectangles now since we no longer need them.

Start Designing Your Banner

Now that the safe areas are defined, let’s start designing! You can begin placing elements within these boundaries. Add images, text, and other graphics by dragging and dropping them into your canvas. Adjust their size and position to make sure everything fits within the safe zones you’ve established.

Keyword for a Pro template

If you’re looking for a professional design, Canva provides templates that can be a great starting point.

For instance, if you’re creating a banner for a female-focused channel, you can use the keyword "femalecreator" in Canva’s template search. This brings up designs tailored to your theme, some of which are exclusive to Canva Pro users. But if you’re using Canva for free, no worries, just select a design without the crown icon.

In detail, here's how to do it:

  1. Click on ‘Elements’. Type a keyword in the search bar. For this example, let's use "femalecreator".
  2. Click on a template and it will automatically appear on your page.
  3. Adjust key elements like texts and images and make sure it falls inside the safe areas.
  4. Customize the template with your text and images. If you prefer a look that meets your aesthetic, explore Canva's photo library for styles or upload your own images.

Pro tip:
If you happen to see a style of photography in the elements and want to see more like it:

  1. Simply hover over the image and click the three dots.
  2. Click 'Pexels'
  3. Next, type your keyword next to the code in the search bar. In our example, let's choose the keyword "yoga." After that, boom! You'll instantly get tons of images with a similar style. It's super easy!

Now that we have customized our elements, let’s adjust the colors and styles to match your brand:

Click on ‘Styles’ > ‘Color Palettes’ and experiment with different color palettes until you find one that resonates with your channel's aesthetic.

How to Download Your Banner

Once you’re satisfied with your design, it’s time to download the banner:

  1. Click on the ‘Download’ button in Canva
  2. Select PNG for the highest quality.
  3. Save the file to your computer.

Upload Your Banner to YouTube

Now that you have your banner saved on your computer, let’s upload it to your channel:

  1. Log in to your YouTube Channel.
  2. Select ‘Customize Channel
  3. Click ‘Branding’ > ‘Banner Image’ > click ‘Upload’.
  4. Select the banner that we created.
  5. YouTube will show you how the banner will appear on different devices, using the same safe areas you set in Canva.
Select ‘Done’ if you’re all set.
  6. Click ‘Publish’ on the upper-right side of your screen.

Want to See the Final Outcome? Here It Is!

And there you go! Your YouTube banner looks awesome and is perfectly viewable on any device. It's now ready to attract more viewers to your channel.

Creating your own YouTube channel art can be a fun and rewarding process, especially with the right tools and tips. With Canva and a little know-how about the safe areas, you can make sure your banner grabs attention and gives your channel a polished look. So, go ahead and start designing—you’re all set to make a stunning impression!
