Intro

Instagram is where all the content magic happens—it's a go-to spot where everyone from businesses to influencers shares snapshots of their lives. And guess what? You can level up your Instagram game by creating some stunning Instagram puzzles on Canva. Whether you're a seasoned graphic designer or a complete beginner, this easy tutorial will guide you through creating a stunning Instagram puzzle using both the free and pro versions of Canva. Let’s go ahead and discover all the tips and tricks to elevate your Instagram feed!

Step #1: Calculate the size of your Instagram Puzzle

First things first, let’s calculate the size of the puzzle to create a custom size document in Canva. For a 3x3 Instagram grid, each square post is typically 1080x1080 pixels. So, our total canvas size will be 3240x3240 pixels.

Now that we know the ideal size, all we have to do is:

  1. Log into Canva, Select the custom size icon or click 'Create a design,' > ‘Custom Size
  2. Enter the dimensions 3240 (width) x 3240 (height) pixels.
  3. Click ‘Create new design’ and now we have a square format where we can make our perfect Instagram puzzle.

Step #2: Create guides in Canva

To make sure each part of your puzzle aligns perfectly, you'll need to set up guides on your canvas.

To do this:

  1. Go to 'File' > 'View settings' and click ‘Add Guides
  2. Select custom, then add three rows and columns with zero gap between them.
  3. Then, click 'Add guides.'

And there you go! These guides will help you visualize and design each piece of our puzzle accurately, without any content overlaps.

Step #3: Design the Instagram Puzzle in Canva

Next, the creative part begins! Let’s proceed by choosing a template that matches our style.

  1. Click the ‘Design Tab’ > 'Template'.
  2. Explore and choose a professionally designed template that fits your theme, or start designing from scratch.

In this instance, we’ll go for the keywords “organicflowerskincare” to find a particular design.

Now that we've chosen our style, click on the design to apply it to the document. Remember, we're making nine Instagram posts in one document, so make sure that each post only fills one square.

To arrange content on a box:

  1. Select all elements from your design. We want our first design to go inside the middle box.
  2. Zoom out to see the anchor points of the elements. This will help us move the elements to our desired area.
  3. Drag each anchor to fit within the guide boundaries.
  4. Resize and adjust elements to ensure they create a cohesive design that flows consistently across Instagram posts. Let the flower designs overlap on other pages to create a 'puzzle' effect. The key is to keep the post captions and pictures within the box to make sure they are readable.

Building posts in the other squares can get really messy. To prevent that from happening, work on new designs on a separate page and then consolidate them onto your main canvas.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Click "Add page"
  2. Select a new design.
  3. Shrink the elements to fit a box.
  4. Move these elements to page 1 and place them in a square.
  5. To fill the remaining squares, return to page 2, pick a different design, and do the same—resize and move the templates.

To access the collection of templates with your designs, just click the “back” icon.

Just a quick tip: If you're having trouble dragging everything from page 2 to page 1, you can select the elements and either copy (CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) or cut (CTRL+X) and paste them to the page. Just reposition them as needed.

Now that we are almost done with our design, we left out one square so let’s make an Instagram carousel. This feature lets you add multiple photos or videos to one post, making your Instagram more interesting.

Here's how to link one carousel post to our existing puzzle:

  1. Choose a carousel template for your cover.
  2. Reduce the size of all elements, move them to page one, and place them on the square.

For the other carousel slides, we’ll design it separately so stick around.

Customizing the Elements in your post

To make your series of posts informative while still creating a cohesive and eye-catching visual, customize the placement and color of the elements to your liking.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Keep things organized. Rename the document by clicking on the “untitled design” on the upper left.
  • Get creative. Delete or move elements to your liking.
  • Set background elements behind the content. Do this by selecting Position > To Back.
  • Use the copy style feature if you want to copy a color from one element to another.
  • Create the "puzzle" illusion by making sure that the large background elements overlap at least two squares. This makes our posts appear as part of a single image.
  • Double-click on the text boxes to edit the text.
  • Drag a picture over an existing one to change it, or find a frame to add to your post.
  • Discover more elements similar to what you already have. Click on the element, then press the 'info' icon > 'see more like this' to explore similar options.

Preview post as a standalone piece

To make sure each post stands out individually and fits perfectly into the bigger picture, we'll preview each segment by adding black square overlays. This will help you check if there are still adjustments needed on each post.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Click 'R' on your keyboard to generate a square.
  2. Drag the square to cover the posts.
  3. Change the color to black and set position to Front.
  4. Duplicate the square and position to the other posts.
  5. Lock the black squares by selecting multiple elements (Hold SHIFT key + Click) and clicking 'Group'.
  6. Now, we've hidden the other posts to focus on one as a preview. Drag the squares to see the other posts. When everything looks good, remove the black squares.

Let's remove the grids to see the overall picture by clicking 'File' > 'Show Rulers and Guides'.

Step #4: Download your Instagram Puzzle design from Canva

Now that our puzzle is up and ready, download the full design from Canva by clicking 'Share.' Then, select PNG as the file type.

If you're a Canva Pro user, you can increase the resolution before downloading to prevent any pixelation when you upload it to Instagram.

Once you're all set, click download

Step #5: Split your Instagram Puzzle

After downloading your design, use an online tool to split the image into nine separate posts. You can go to https://mysocialboutique.co/instagram-grid-maker/ to do this in one go.

All you have to do is:

  1. Click 'Select Image' to upload your work.
  2. Specify the number of splits (we only need 3).
  3. Click 'Split Image,'
  4. Now that each image segment is downloadable, always remember to rename each image in the correct order before posting them on Instagram, as we are following a specific numbering sequence.

    To do this:

  1. Download the first image.
  2. Name the file '1' then save.
  3. Continue with the next images, renaming each one in sequence.

Step #6: Publish your Instagram Puzzle

Once you've downloaded all the images, transfer them to your phone.

Next, Tap the '+' button on Instagram and upload them one by one. . Begin from the bottom right and move left to ensure they're in the right order. Check the images on your computer to ensure each one is posted accurately for your profile's visual grid effect.

Since we have a carousel post cover as part of the puzzle, let's create the rest of the content for that series of posts.

Step #7: How to Insert Carousels in an Instagram Puzzle

Let's design the carousel slides similar to the previous Canva document, making sure they match the overall design of the puzzle.

Here's how:

  1. Open Canva and choose 'Social Media' > 'Instagram Post (square)' > 'Create Blank' to start a new blank document.
  2. Click 'Design' and Search for "organicflowerskincare" to find a similar design that we had.
  3. Pick a carousel design and click 'Apply all 5 pages.' Let's remove the front cover, as our puzzle already has one.
  4. Customize the text, images, and other elements to your taste, but keep the back elements unchanged to maintain a seamless look for the carousel.
  5. Download and send them to your phone.

Once you have it on your phone, upload it in order. First, find the carousel cover that matches the puzzle that we made earlier.

Then, click the 'select multiple' icon so we can add more pages to our post.

Double-check to make sure everything is in the right order. If everything looks good, click 'next' and then 'share.'

Great job! You've created a carousel post on Instagram that keeps our puzzle design on-point! Once we finish uploading all nine puzzle posts, our Instagram feed will look cute and professional.

Step #8: How to Insert Reels in an Instagram Puzzle

Turn our Instagram puzzle posts into fun reel covers with these easy steps:

  1. Open Canva and choose the 'Instagram Reel' document type.
  2. Upload the puzzle piece you want to use as a reel cover.
  3. Add the image to your page and stretch it to fill the edges.
  4. Click on the page background and select the color tool. Press '+' then use the color picker to match the background color of your design.
  5. Once you're finished, your post is good to go! For an extra touch, consider adding other elements to complement your design.

Conclusion

An Instagram puzzle isn't just about grabbing attention—it completely transforms the feel of your feed. Canva simplifies the process of crafting stunning, informative Instagram puzzles that stand out. Now that you know the tricks, why not have some fun? Whether you're using Canva Pro or the basics, you can mix images, carousels, and reels with various layouts to bring your Instagram feed to life!
