Today, we’ll focus on the essentials of video creation with Canva. We'll cover the basics, where to find free content (audio, video, photos, stickers). Plus, I'll walk you through Canva's key video editing features, so you can feel like a pro from the get-go. By the end of this tutorial, you’ll be whipping up pro-level videos from scratch, no prior experience needed. Let's get started!

First up, click the "Video" icon on Canva's homepage. You'll see a bunch of video formats pop up—pick one that matches where you're planning to share your video. Canva offers everything from classic horizontal videos to specific formats like TikTok or Facebook videos, suitable for any platform.

Once you've picked your format, just click on the tile to kick off a new project, or use the magnifying glass to search for the perfect template.

Now, let's browse Canva's vast library of over 8,000 TikTok templates. Finding the perfect one is a breeze. Simply use keywords to zero in on specific styles and themes, or play around with the handy filter tools on the left.

To see how it works, I chose the "Fitness" category, clicked “yoga” as the theme, and fine-tuned my color choices with just a few clicks. Once I found the ideal template, I clicked on it and it instantly loaded into the Canva editor.

Canva can be your ultimate game-changer for editing videos that will unleash your creativity and produce professional-looking videos without breaking the bank. By mastering what Canva has to offer, you can seriously amp up your videos with cool effects, smooth transitions, and eye-catching overlays. Let's explore how to make that happen!

Canva Video Timeline

All good videos start with an organized timeline. The video timeline in Canva, like any other video editor, serves as a visual representation of your video's structure, allowing you to arrange and synchronize various elements like clips, audio tracks, and effects. It's awesome that Canva maintained its simple design for this feature.

One small limitation with this feature is that it allows only one video track - you won't be able to layer multiple videos together. This means you can go wild with audio tracks and graphics, but when it comes to videos, it's a one-layer party. Not a deal-breaker, but something to keep in mind as you work your creative magic. Here are some tools found in the timeline:

  • Grid View
Using this, the timeline is sectioned by each video/image element into their own page, allowing you to see all tracks and have more control over them. To see all the pages, click “Grid View” at the bottom of the page.Canva puts the videos/images in the timeline as 'pages', and using the grid view, it will provide an overview of all the pages that are present in the timeline.

  • Zoom Page
The Zoom Page is like a map of your work. To zoom in and out, just click the rectangle icon, then the zoom icon.

Cropping a Video in Canva

Crop video clips directly within the editor, providing you the ability to focus on the best parts of your footage. To do this, just click on the clip and click on the “Clip” icon. Then, drag the beginning or end to crop the video file.

Splitting a Video into 2 different clips

Splitting videos gives you the flexibility to craft your content with precision and polish, making it a great feature if you want to trim out some parts of a video or introduce new elements between scenes.

To do this:

  1. Click on the video that you want to split.
  2. Zoom in on the timeline for precise editing.
  3. Move the time indicator to the exact spot where you want the cut.
  4. Right-click on the clip, then choose "Split Page" (or simply hit the S key as a shortcut).

Element Timing in Canva

Timing matters! By controlling when text and images appear in your video, you can tell your story better. Like sprinkling in the ideal ingredients at precisely the right moment, it elevates your video from good to unforgettable.

You can do this by right clicking on the element and selecting “Show timing”.

Once you've added the element, you can drag it onto the timeline to adjust how long it stays in your video.

Video Filters and Adjustments in Canva

Filters in a video editor are like the seasoning to your dish—they add flavor and character, enhancing the visual appeal of your footage. In Canva, you can tweak the look of your video with filters and detailed adjustments. Tools like adjusting brightness, contrast, saturation and pre-made filters are ready to elevate your video's mood in just a click.

To make this possible, just click on your video, then hit "Edit video" to choose the effects or adjustments you want to add.

Adding Transitions in your videos

Make your videos look pro with Canva's sleek transition effects. Just click the "Transition" button between scenes, and choose from a bunch of cool options to spice up your video.

Some transitions have the option to edit the duration and direction so feel free to experiment and be creative!

Working with Grids and Frames in Canva

Use grids and frames to creatively place video elements within your project, allowing for innovative layouts and designs. To do this, click on the "Elements" tab, find frames or grids that fit your style, then simply add your videos and pictures inside by hovering over them.

Canva Animate Button

If you want to make your content more dynamic and engaging, try to animate elements within your video to add motion like zooming in and out. There are lots of animations to choose from!

To set an animation, click on any page, choose "Animate," and take your pick! Easy as that!

If you want to be extra, You can also animate elements or texts by clicking on it and applying animation.

Video background Remover

Say goodbye to distractions and let your subject shine in your videos. With the video background remover tool, exclusively for Canva Pro users, you can effortlessly highlight what truly matters.

Simply select your video clip, click "Edit video," and then "Background Remover".

After all the hard work, it’s time to enjoy your masterpiece. Finalize your video project by exporting, downloading, or directly sharing it on social media. Canva provides flexible options to make sure you can share your content in the most convenient way for your audience.

Here are a few choices:

  • Share a link to watch
To do this, click “Share”, “Share link to watch”, and simply copy the link. This is convenient if you want to present your video instantly.
  • Download Video
If you want to save your video on your device or computer, go to the "Share" option, then select "Download". From there, specify your preferred file type (this is typically set to mp4 by default), and finally, click the "Download" button.

Spread the love for your video far and wide by linking your Canva account to various social media platforms! With just a few clicks, you can effortlessly share your masterpiece with friends, family, and followers across the digital universe.
